Update on Tree Nut Allergy

We have had an eventful couple of weeks in the allergy department.

At Abby's 5 year well check we talked about her allergy in kindergarten this fall. That led to me making a follow up allergy appointment to ask the many questions I have about keeping Abby safe in public school. My questions with the allergist prompted him to skin test allergy for tree nuts.

We have a very strong PEANUT allergy and that hasn't and will likely never change. However, last summer after doing bloodwork, we were told Abby was allergic to TREE NUTS. We found it strange since she drank almond milk daily, including the morning of the test. The numbers were "weak" but present, so we cut out tree nuts.

Last week we did a skin test for the many tree nuts out there (pecans, almonds, walnuts, cashews, sesame, etc). This is what her back looked like. Note that #9 is histamine and it should be the biggest reaction.

Her skin test showed a "weak" presence of allergy to walnuts, cashews, and almonds. They are #1, #3, and #4 above. So, we made the decision to do a food challenge in his office. He was 98% sure she was not allergic but felt safest testing her in his office in small amounts increasing to larger and doing one more skin test.

We started with 1 cc of almond milk, waited 15 minutes then 2 cc, then 4 cc then 6 cc. She was so excited to have it... after the initial fear it would make her sick. No reaction!

So, Marcus ran to the store and grabbed a can of cashews. She ate 1/2 of one, then 2, then 4 with 15 minute intervals in between and nothing happened! Hooray!

We can happily eliminate tree nuts from her allergies and it is now just peanuts! The peanut allergy is still major, these nuts measured 3 and under on blood tests and her peanut number is over 100. And we likely won't give her many tree nuts since they are processed with peanuts and fearful she'll accept a peanut on accident. But, we know almond milk is okay and we don't have to be as fearful around the many tree nut desserts.

We are still trying to balance what is reasonable with the school and what is safe for Abby as she enters kindergarten. I have had numerous conversations with the nurse, our pediatrician and our allergist. So far, we have resolved 3 major issues and have one hurdle left. Will you join us in praying that we can convince the school to have kids wash their hands after lunch?

Kids will still have nut foods at lunch (she'll sit at a nut free table) and if they don't wash their hands the peanut oils could be placed on shared objects and if Abby contacts them she could get a rash/red eyes. She wouldn't go into full anaphylaxis if she didn't ingest the nut; however, anaphylaxis starts as a rash/red eyes and not giving an Epi Pen soon enough can be tragic. So, we will have to Epi her and call 911 if she shows those symptoms from touching peanut oil or rely on the judgement of the school to determine if it is just touch or ingestion. It is a scary place to be. Hand washing would eliminate the possibility for us.

As a side note, we did learn that anti-bac gels do not remove peanut oil from the skin. It must be soap and water or wipes like baby wipes. We'd happily provide baby wipes to Abby's class as a solution; however, after lunch she is cross mingled with kindergartners from numerous classes for things like music, PE, art, etc. So, it would be more difficult and is also riskier since she won't be returning to her desk with her teacher during the high risk hour after lunch.

We'll keep the conversation going and look for more solutions!

Our Valentine Celebrations

We have been celebrating Valentine's Day for a good week around here!

On a recent snow day, Abby and I made her Valentine's. I had some cute business card size photos made with Abby's five year pictures and tied those onto a handful of pixie sticks and baggies of gummy bears for Abby's school friends.

While I was doing that, she drew pictures for each of her friends.

I also had her write each of their names and she was GREAT at it! I was so proud of her for taking the time and not complaining! She was obviously bored being home another day and happy to have some art to do!

She did Micah's first.... "because I love him". Oh boy!

The Friday night before Valentine's Day we had date night with another couple at Jack Allen's Kitchen while Abby was at the YMCA playing. We exchanged little gifts that we had picked out for ourselves- I got a new bracelet and Marcus got a pair of bluetooth headphones.

I joined Abby at her school party on Wednesday, just before Valentine's. They all made boxes from Kleenex boxes and here is Abby's. Super cute!

The kids exchanged simple Valentines and had an ice cream sundae party.

Abby's little Valentine survey made me laugh. I attended a talk on Monday morning about love languages for kids and I can't decide if hers is gifts or touch. Clearly, I am on the right track! :)

On Friday afternoon, we met up with other Moms from our MOPS group and delivered Valentine cards to a local nursing home. It was a great opportunity to talk to Abby about serving others!

Finally, on Friday night we had heart shaped pizza from Papa Murphy's and we had cupcakes from Gigis. We loved them both!

Dentist Appointment

Abby has the best dentist and she has the prettiest offices! It looks like a fancy hotel, but is just an amazing lobby!

Our last dental visit was March of last year when Abby had cavities, crowns, and root canals needed and we learned that flossing toddler's teeth is important and costly! We also learned that fruit snacks are bad!

So, we were a little nervous this time. We even bought the good dental insurance this year so we could see Dr. Singletary and so that we'd be ready if another big bill came.... and it didn't! No cavities. Very little plaque and we found out her 6 year molars are coming in and front bottom center teeth are loose. Um, is this my baby we are talking about?

Abby did great and dug through the prize drawers before picking a new rubber ducky for her bath collection. We celebrated with Sonic milkshakes :)

Bravest Girl

Abby has asked to jump on the special trampoline at the mall for a long time. We've watched other kids and always told her she could try it when she was 5. You only have to be 30 pounds, but we didn't her to jostle about or go too high.

She remembered when we were at the mall recently and we talked about doing it one night when both Marcus and I could be with her. So, today we met friends at the mall to ride the carousel and have lunch and the guy saw her looking and offered us a free ride since it was slow.

We called Marcus and her agreed provided I took a video of the whole thing. Abby was SO excited. She kept telling me she wanted to say hi to the people on the top floor of the mall. She took off her boots and they strapped her in!

And she laughed up and down the trampoline! The worker was having fun trying to fly her higher. She would laugh harder. And, people stopped and watched her JOY!

She even got high enough to talk to the people on the second floor!

I uploaded the full video here. I love her bravery and her sweet little laugh for a solid two minutes!

Dad's Top Golf Birthday

For Christmas this year, we gave my Dad and Jacque a gift certificate to Top Golf. They had never heard of it so we agreed to play over lunch one day. We ended up playing this past week to celebrate Dad's birthday and had the most fun! It was in the mid-60s while we played and was nice and sunny!

Dad and Jacque are regular golfers so it comes as no surprise they beat us. The surprise- I beat Marcus on both games. I have zero golfing ability, but could consistently get 3-8 points in the same little area of the yellow "crater" that wasn't far away. It works for me. Marcus played around with different clubs, tried for big points by going deep and going all or nothing with his points. It was great fun to play well and beat him! We played a chipping game on our 3rd game and he beat me on that one.

I hope we get to play again- it is fun for real golfers and people like me who don't have a clue. It is heated, shaded, and they have great food and drinks while you play.

Case in point, we ended lunch with doughnut holes that you could inject with chocolate and/or raspberry sauce. What golf course brings that to you?

Happy Birthday Dad! You are the tops in my book!

5 Year Well Check

This girl is beautiful, smart and healthy!

We had her five year well check (yea for no shots!) this week and Abby passed with flying colors!

She was on track developmentally hitting all the milestones for her age.
She passed both her vision and hearing tests.
She is 90th percentile for her height (45") and her weight (49lbs).

We are so very grateful for such a good report!

Year 5 Photos and Birthday Quiz

I was a lucky girl who won a gift certificate to Adorn Studios here in Austin to have a free photo session and CD of the images! It was a great prize on paper and a priceless blessing in reality! I never spend a ton of money on photos, but I am always so jealous of the beautiful pictures of my friends. Tiffany at Adorn did an amazing job of really capturing Abby- her personality, her many different faces, and her sweetness. I just love these!

Waco Zoo with Friends

The morning after Christmas, we drove to Waco with our friends to visit the Waco Zoo. Their girls have never been and we love the zoo! And, since our girls are the best of friends, it just made sense. Kyleigh was with us, which worked out perfectly to have another helper to corral three happy energetic girls!

It was nice to have someone there to snap a family picture for us! The giraffe photobombed us :)

The playground is always a big hit for Marcus, ahem, Abby.

It was so fun to do the zoo with rookies. We first told the girls we were going to the tigers and Addison who is 4 freaked out. We realized she thought the zoo was like a petting zoo and she was scared to pet the tiger. Hilarious!

I had a new little friend most of the day. This girl is so funny and so much trouble! But, she is so cute and so loving, too.

I love Abby's smile in this picture! We are doing 5 year shots next week and I pray I get a picture like this from her. Her big smile and little chin dimple are too cute!

It was pretty cold for our trip- low 50s most of the time. It felt like winter and looked like fall with all the dying leaves on the ground.

We love visiting the zoo!

Afterward, we all had lunch at Ninfa's and drove home. Kyleigh and Abby fell asleep.... about 10 minutes from home. Isn't that always the case!

5th Birthday Fun!

Sunday was Abby's 5th birthday and even though her party isn't until this weekend, we wanted her actual birthday to be lots of fun!

We woke her up at 7:30 with presents! She finally got the Sofia castle she has been wanting. She opened it and said, "yea! now I can take it off my Christmas list". Funny girl! She also got the Sofia family and her own amulet to wear.

We snapped a few more pictures before going to Dunkin Donuts for pre-church breakfast. We even took some extra munchkins to Abby's Sunday School class.

Nana met us for lunch and gave her another present- a cute little dress for her new doll from Christmas to wear!

We came home and rested and then it was time to pick up Michael and go to Gattitown for pizza and video games. The kids has lots of fun!

We are so very blessed to have this big five year old in our house and couldn't love her more!

2013 Christmas Day

Our Christmas Day was fun filled!

We had to wake up Abby about 7:30 because her Mimi was almost here and we didn't want her to miss out. We have minimized Santa in our house, so there were no new presents under the tree from overnight. We had left her a note from Holly (our Elf on the Shelf) that she was gone until next Christmas and she had fun and will miss Abby. She also praised her to all the times she saw her share, encourage and give grace to others.

Before Mimi arrived, we sat on the floor and opened our stockings. Lots of great little things packed into those big plaid socks this year!

Mimi arrived about 7:45 and it gave me just enough time to put this beauty in the oven. I love Cinnamon Roll French Toast casserole on Christmas morning. We also had sausage balls and fruit salad.

Abby opened new Little Mermaid legos and had fun impressing us with how well she can assemble them by herself. The directions on those were all pictures, so she did great!

Mimi opened a new tablet and had fun learning all the bells and whistles. She has an older laptop and flip phone so the world is apps is all new and exciting.

We assembled pizza balls (recipe coming soon!) and our Jesus birthday cake before heading to my Dad's house for a late lunch.

We played a new game- on the blog here- and had the most fun! The adults were into it as much as the kids and Abby was the big winner! She got a Target gift card. The rest of the prizes were little fun things- like Peppermint Oreos.

Cohen opened a new airsoft gun and the guys and kids had fun shooting in the country. We also played mafia together and learned quickly who is a good liar and who stinks! Cohen and Kyleigh could not fool their parents!

We were home by dark and brought Kyleigh home for a few days. It was a wonderful day!
